West Hawaii County Band offers concert

The West Hawaii County Band will offer a free concert celebrating America this evening at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona.

The performance, which will showcase composers George Gershwin, Anton Dvorak, Aaron Copeland, Neil Diamond and many others, gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Maestro Lisa Archuletta, a graduate of the Yale University School of Music, will direct the concert.

This performance is part of the band’s monthly concert series sponsored by the Hawaii County Parks and Recreation Department and the West Hawaii County Band Friends, a nonprofit organization.

Reception slated for artist, writer Dennis Gregory

The artwork of artist and writer Dennis Gregory will be showcased in a reception slated Saturday at Rumley Gallery in King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

Featured during the 4 to 7 p.m. event will be Gregory’s unique oil paintings of island scenery, along with a rare portrait of singer Judy Collins, that was painted for the artist. Gregory’s literary works, which include two adventure novels, a poetry collection and colorful biography, and his CD of original songs, will also be offered.

Thousands flocked to Kahilu Theatre during 2014-15 season

Kahilu Theatre says more than 20,000 people attended shows, films and workshops during the theater’s 2014-2015 season.

During the season, which spanned September through June with a summer preseason in July and August, the theater produced four shows of its own, presented 37 visiting artists, and hosted 28 community rentals, Kahilu officials said. In addition, more than 5,000 schoolchildren attended 14 youth shows.

The 2015-16 season will be launched in August.

‘Jazz in the Forest’ continues

The Volcano Art Center’s Jazz in the Forest continues with a jazz jam and tribute to Miles Davis on July 25.

Joining Volcano Choy and his Volcano Art Center Jazz Ensemble (Brian McCree, Reggie Griffin and Bruce David) will be some of the Big Island’s most talented jazz musicians. Shows are at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the 4:30 p.m. performance are $15 for art center members and $18 for nonmembers. The 7:30 p.m. performance will be $18 art center members and $20 for nonmembers.
